ART OF WORDS Poets' Open Mic In-Person

This popular monthly event, co-hosted by Tamell "Big" Bailey and CathyB, is a great opportunity for adults and young adults to practice performance skills in front of a small audience, receive feedback, and get inspiration for creating new works. Except for the featured artist, individual performances are limited to 3 minutes and may be on any “radio friendly” topic. If time allows, additional performances may be invited.

Bugsy Calhoun (real name Jamal Washington) is an emcee and spoken word poet from Brooklyn, New York who is active in the poetry community, particularly in the Midlands of South Carolina. He is a founding member of the Unusual Suspects poetry troop and has released spoken word and hip hop projects. A poet and emcee whose style is deeply influenced by Hip Hop culture, he often focuses on themes of community, Black business, family, and the realities of life.

Bugsy Calhoun has released six spoken word and hip hop music projects and has created several open mic and slam events, including "In The Beginning there was the word" and "The Queens of Poetry." You can find his projects on his Bandcamp page.
